Introducing Team USO running in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
For the first time ever, the USO will have a team participating in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The goal is to fundraise vital funds which will continue to allow the USO to strengthen the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families. Let’s meet our team!
Melissa Aguilar is a United States retired Army Veteran with over 23 years of experience with numerous combat tours. Her firsthand experience with transitioning from a military career made her an ideal addition to the USO team in 2022. She now works at the USO as a Transition Specialist at Fort Cavazos, Texas. Melissa began running in junior high, has completed two Bataan Death Marches and one half-marathon. This will be her first full marathon. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.
Brittney Betcher is a Nurse Surgery Coordinator for the VA Orthopedic Department and an Army veteran who served four years as an Army nurse. She became involved with the USO through fellow Team USO runner, Melissa Aguilar. A passionate runner, Brittney has participated in numerous races, with her first half marathon in Texas holding special significance as it marked a personal milestone after getting back in shape while running with an infant. Since moving back to Minnesota, Brittney has transitioned to a nursing career at the Minneapolis VA, where she continues to support fellow veterans.
Calvin Bido Vega is an Army Recruiter stationed in Racine, Wisconsin, as part of the Milwaukee recruiting company. Calvin’s connection to the USO began during his military service, where he found the organization to be incredibly helpful while at airports and on base. As an avid runner, Calvin has completed two Army 10 Milers at Fort Liberty, the All-American Half Marathon, the Carolina Beach State Park Trail Half Marathon, two 10K races, the Weymouth Woods 50K ultra marathon, and the Milwaukee Marathon. His passion for running reflects dedication to both his military career and personal fitness.
Sarah Bowers is a homeschooling mom of three who recently stepped down from leading the youth group at her church and is set to start substituting at the local school this fall. Sarah learned about the USO through her brother, who is currently stationed in the Middle East. As an avid runner, Sarah has completed the Grandma’s Half Marathon and the Twin Cities 10 Mile, with the latter holding special significance as they run it in support of a cause close to her family. This commitment to both family and community drives her passion for participating in meaningful events.
Jennifer Ledet is a proud mom of two boys, with the oldest currently serving in the Navy and deployed on the USS Russell. Professionally, Jennifer works in IT, managing the Intranet for a law firm. Having grown up as a military brat and spouse, she has always been aware of the USO and its impactful support for service members and their families. A dedicated runner, Jennifer has completed half marathons in 19 states and considers the Army 10 Miler in Washington, D.C., to be her favorite race, and looking forward to adding more states to that list in 2025.
Michael Miller serves as the principal of an alternative and online school in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, while also being a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard. His experiences as a soldier have fostered a deep appreciation for the USO’s support of service members, particularly during field training when small comforts can make a significant impact. An avid runner and triathlete, Mike has completed various races, from 5ks to marathons, and enjoys participating in events that support meaningful causes while pushing his limits.
Sarah Quiram is a Wedding and Lifestyle Photographer based in Illinois, where she shares her life with her husband. An enthusiastic runner, she has embraced the challenge of various races, including the Champaign Christie Clinic and Starved Rock half-marathons. Running holds special meaning for her, as she dedicates each step to the memory of her grandfather, a proud military veteran, and friends who have served. This upcoming race marks an exciting milestone for Sarah, as it will be her first full marathon, showcasing her commitment to both her passions and cherished memories.
Angela Zavodnik is a Public Health Educator in Minnesota. Her first race was the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in June 2009, and she has participated every year since, with the exception of 2024. Besides countless 5ks, a few 7ks, 10ks and half-marathons, she has run the Medtronic Twin Cities 10 mile a few times, and is excited to return! Angela is a huge supporter and advocate of our service members and their families. And with good reason! Her son is in the Army and will be joining the Minnesota National Guard once training is complete. She said it was a no-brainer for her to be a part of this year’s team.
